Biography

Jordy Evan Sulaiman is a Research Assistant Professor in the Chemical & Biological Engineering (CBE) department at HKUST. He did his postdoctoral training in the Venturelli Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of C. difficile in synthetic human gut communities. Jordy received his Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering in 2022 from HKUST. He also received his M.Phil. degree and B.Eng. degree (First Class Honours with Academic Achievement Medal recognition) from HKUST in 2019 and 2017, respectively.

At HKUST, Jordy conducted research on using proteomics to study antibiotic tolerance and persistence of bacterial population, under the supervision of Prof. Henry Lam. He developed a method to isolate and enrich persister cells for proteomics analysis, obtained the proteome profile of E. coli planktonic persisters, and identified the key players of persistence phenotype by doing cross-population comparison of multiple high-persistence mutants from cyclic antibiotic treatment. During his Ph.D., he investigated the development of tolerance and resistance in Staphylococcus aureus pathogen under drug combination treatment. These works have been published in major peer-reviewed journals in his area of research. He also serves as a reviewer in some of these journals.

Jordy is also experienced in researching electrochemistry. During his undergraduate study, he spent a year in Professor Minhua Shao's laboratory to synthesize electrocatalysts for ethanol fuel cells. His work on the octahedral Platinum-Nickel catalyst was widely covered by local media and newspapers such as Yahoo, Wanweipo, Sing Tao Daily, and South China Morning Post, and also published in a top-notch journal in the catalysis field, ACS Catalysis.
